London Sights Day 1: Mayfair - Jochem.

Mayfair

Mayfair is an area in The west End of London, close to Hyde Park. It is one of the most expensive districts in London and the world.

Mayfair is well-known for the May Fair at Great Brookfield. That took place from 1686 to 1764. The May Fair takes 15 days and the most famous squares that are being used in that time period are: Grosvenor Square, Hanover Square and Berkeley Square. Now it is the Shepherd Market. The Grosvenor family is also very important for the development of London’s fashionable Mayfair. The Grosvenor family is still the occupant since 1677. At the end of the 18th century most of Mayfair was built on prestigious housing for the upper class. Mayfair became in the early 20th century more commercial instead of residential. Most of the homes were converted to working places or offices for major corporate headquarters and embassies. Mayfair had become a place for the richest people from all around the world due to the prestigious housing and the history. And to satisfy all those rich people they had to get a lot of famous products in London like Ferrari, Bugatti and Harrods which can all be found in and around Mayfair.

Nowadays there are a lot of museums and galleries like the Royals Academy of Arts. And a lot of high quality hotels and crazy stores where you can buy almost anything you want like Harrods.
