London Sights Day 2: The British Museum / Elgin Marbles - Britt, Madelon, Veronique

British museum / Elgin Marbles

What are The Elgin Marbles?
It is room 18 in the British museum, also known as The Parthenon. It is a collection of ancient Greek sculptures and architectural details. Elgin was the curator of the sculptures. That is why they call them The Elgin Marbles. Elgin was a lover of art and antiquities, but he was very concerned about damage being done to important artworks in the temples of Greece.

What is the history of the Elgin Marbles?
The history of the sculpture is in Greece. The sculptures were brought to London by Thomas Bruce. He was the Seventh Lord Elgin. It was built 2500 years ago. It was built to honour a goddess called Athena. After an explosion caused by gun powder, many sculptures have been removed from Greece. The sculptures are divided among the museums in eight nations.

What does the Elgin Marbles exhibition look like?
The sculptures are made of stone. Some of the sculptures are humans and some are horses.
We are going to give our own opinions and say what we think of the sculptures.
We think that the sculptures are beautiful because they are made out of stone and we like that they are not renovated but that they are still the same as when they were made. That way you can still see how old they are and where their history lies. We also like that they used animals as well and that it’s not only humans. We also like that there is al lot of dynamic in the sculptures.

       Discussion
There is a lot of pressure on the marbles, because the officials of Greece want them back. This discussion took place after the theft of the pillars. Greece has made a lot of attempts to take the marbles back. A lot of ministers are agreeing with Greece, but England doesn’t want to give the marbles back.
What do you think?
Do you think the marbles should go back to Greece?
