London Sights Day 2: The Tower / Crown Jewels - Rhodé, Sophie.

TOWER OF LONDON

The Tower of London is one of the most famous sights. It’s also one of the oldest, because it was built in 1066 by William the Conqueror  (beginning) and it was ‘finished’ by the royal families who built other parts around the original Tower. The Tower was originally designed to be a fortress to watch over the people, but it soon became more than only that. It became the royal residence of the King. The Tower was also used as a prison in the 17th century. A fun fact is that the imprisoned didn’t enter through the main entrance, but they used the ‘side’ entrance. They travelled by boat so they wouldn’t be noticed very much. Who knows this saying: ”When the ravens leave the Tower, England will fall.”? Explanation: The iconic black ravens have always been part of the Tower. The old story says that they ate the remains of the executed. Hundreds of years ago there were executions almost every day, so the ravens stayed nearby the Tower and they have actually never left.

CROWN JEWELS

The crown jewels are described as the ceremonial treasures of England. They have mostly been acquired since 1660 by English kings and queens. Now we have a fun question for you! How much do you think that all the crown jewels are worth? (answer: between three and five billion pounds!). The security is very strict. You can’t make pictures and some are personally guarded. The crown jewels are the symbols of the English monarchy.

That was the most important information that we could give you in such a short time. Are there any questions? No….? Then we thank you very much for listening!
